The electric Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt are running against the Hyundai Sonata (hybrid version available) for North American Car of the Year honors. The three finalists were announced on Thursday. A jury of 49 journalists from the United States and Canada will pick the winner and announce it on January 10, during the Detroit auto show.
Much praised Nissan Leaf was recently named the European Car of the Year 2011. The Volt (Ampera in the Old World) has received similarly enthusiastic reviews and President Barack Obama's personal endorsement. The Sonata, a non-EV, has also been very well received by American consumers.
Gas-guzzling Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango and Ford Explorer are the finalists in the truck category.
