BMW i8 to star in Mission Impossible IV

Tom Cruise will drive the electric/diesel hybrid i8 in new Mission Impossible film The Ghost Protocol, says The Sun.

And it will go on sale in 2013 as part of a radical brand of BMW electric/hybrid cars.

The brand, launched this week in Munich, will be called BMWi - with the first models an electric city car, the BMW i3, and the high-performance i8 coupé.

The i3 will be a zero-emission all-electric supermini with room for four and a range in excess of 100 miles. It is aimed at commuters around the world. But the car that will change the image of electric motoring will be the stunning i8, a four-seat coupé with supercar performance, but fuel economy of nearly 90mpg, a range of 435 miles and CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km - and that means no road tax.

The incredible performance comes from a relatively small 1.5-litre turbo diesel, boosted by two electric motors, that delivers 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. Expect a price around £100,000 plus.

BMW's Sales and Marketing boss Ian Robertson said the new brand and cars would "radically alter the motor industry and set a new benchmark for premium electric cars".

He added: "These cars and the i brand will shift the game and shape the future of motoring.

"It will change the way we build cars with new materials and production techniques and the way we drive."

He said it was too early to talk prices for the new cars but said that the i3 - despite being a small city car - would have a premium price and cost more than such rivals as the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt.

Luxury The ground-breaking brand follows a decision at the weekend by Rolls- Royce, also owned by BMW, to develop an all-electric Phantom as the first ultra-luxury electric car.

And BMW are also working on plans for an electric Mini - the German Group own Mini - to complete their electric range.

To that end BMW have been testing a fleet of 600 prototype electric Minis in the UK and around the world for the last two years.

And research from those drivers who took part in the Mini electric trials has been vital in developing the BMW i3 city car.

Spiders lead Mazda to recall 65,000 cars

Mazda has some creepy crawly culprits in its new safety recall — spiders.

According to the Associated Press, after discovering spider webs in the vents, the Japanese automaker is recalling more than 50,000 Mazda6 cars from the 2009-2010 model years in the United States and an additional 15,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

The company said Thursday a spider could weave a web in a vent connected to the fuel tank system and clog up the tank's ventilation. Pressure on the fuel tank could lead to a crack, causing fuel leakage and the risk of a fire.

Mazda said it was unaware of any fires, injuries or crashes in the vehicles.

Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes said dealers had identified 20 cases in which spider webs were found in the vents. The webs were linked to yellow sac spiders, Barnes said, but it was unclear why they were crawling into the Mazda6 rather than other vehicles.

Adding to the mystery, Barnes said the arachnoid attraction to the sporty cars — which the company has marketed with its "zoom-zoom" tagline — had no specific connection to a particular region of North America.

"Perhaps yellow sac spiders like to go zoom-zoom?" Barnes quipped.

The recall involves vehicles with V4 engines built from April 2008 to February 2010.

Owners will be notified by mid-March and told to take their vehicles to dealers for inspection and repairs. Dealers will inspect and clean up the vent line and install a spring to prevent a spider from entering the vent line.

Customers can call Mazda at (800) 222-5500.

VIDEO: Renault ZE electric Santa ad

French carmaker Renault is telling everyone 'the next Christmas is going to be electric'. The Renault Fluence ZE, the Kangoo ZE and the three-seatter Twizy, all scheduled to go on sale in 2011, are briefly featured in this Renault's French television ad, along with the Zoe, expected to debut in 2012.

Earlier this December, Renault suggested that its Fluence ZE electric sedan could go on sale in Portugal for around 22,000 euros (after a 5,000 euros state discount), plus an 80 euros monthly fee for the electric battery. The Kangoo ZE will cost 24,000, plus a 90 euros monthly fee.

The three-seater Renault Twizy, expected to debut in late 2011, will cost around 16,000 euros, about 2,000 less than the Zoe, the french carmaker estimates.

VIDEO: Renault Twingo 'lesbian' ad causes a buzz in Italy

Sex definitely sells. It hasn't been banned from the Italian airwaves, contrary to what the Daily Mail and the Huffington Post have reported, but Renault Twingo's 'lesbian' TV ad has caused a buzz in Italy and online.

The controversial commercial features two young women exchanging flirtatious glances at a cocktail party before trailing off to a bedroom. The brunette teasingly strips down to black lingerie while the blonde blindfolds her with a silk stocking before stealing the brunette's pink Twingo. 'New Twingo Miss Sixty, Competition is a Female Business', goes the tagline.

State TV RAI and Mediaset, headed by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, did air the ad, but latter drop it. Sky Italy keeps airing the commercial, which has been criticized by gay rights groups. Anyhow, the ad is a hit on YouTube, with the video bellow getting over 340,000 hits in a matter of days.
