Estonia plans nationwide mobility network

Estonia announced Thursday that it would sell 10 million carbon credits to Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation and use the proceeds to set up a nationwide network of charge-points for electric cars, the AFP reported.

Prime Minister Andrus Ansip said that the government had approved the sale of the unused credits -- tradeable allowances granted by Brussels to European Union members in a drive to limit greenhouse gas emissions by industry.

"Under a Green Investment Scheme, the proceeds will be invested into the establishment of a country-wide charging infrastructure for electric vehicles," Ansip told reporters.

Around 500 Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric cars are to be provided to local authorities for use by social workers. A grant scheme is also to be set up to support the purchase of electric vehicles by private individuals.

"We hope that around 1,000 electric cars will be on our streets by the end of 2012," Ansip added. That figure includes the 500 allocated to local authorities.

Estonia -- a former Soviet-ruled nation of 1.3 million which joined the EU in 2004 -- holds a general election on Sunday.

The centre-right Ansip rejected suggestions that he had made the announcement Thursday in a drive to get the environmentalist vote.

"Talks have been ongoing for a long time and it is pure coincidence," he insisted.

The plan involves setting up some 250 points able to charge an electric vehicle's battery to up to 80 percent capacity within 30 minutes. They are to be located in major cities and along main highways.

"This is a very innovative project. The future will show whether and when electric cars will be in mass use, but this will help us to increase rapidly the number of electric cars in Estonia and to save energy," Economy Minister Juhan Parts told reporters.

Preços dos veículos eléctricos em Portugal

Existem presentemente sete modelos de automóveis eléctricos em comercialização ou em pré-reserva em Portugal que, segundo o Estado, cumprem todos os requisitos para serem abrangidos pelo programa de benefícios fiscais (que concede descontos até 6.500 euros).

São estes, e de acordo com a Portaria 468/2010 de 7 de Julho:

Os preços

Uma vez que alguns destes veículos ainda só foram vendidos a clientes empresariais, nem todos os modelos têm à data o seu preço final publicamente divulgado. Outras marcas indicam o valor claramente nos respectivos sites:

Os Smart eléctricos são comercializados em sistema de leasing a 4 anos (ou 60.000 km). Na Alemanha, a mensalidade situa-se nos 700 euros. Em Portugal, o valor não é divulgado pela marca, que contudo indica que rondará os números alemães (link Smart). Para já, a Smart conta a Câmara Municipal de Lisboa entre os seus clientes empresariais.

O Renault Fluence ZE é vendido em Portugal a 21.620 euros, indica a marca francesa (22.000 € + IVA a 21% - 5.000 € de incentivo do Estado). O aluguer mensal da bateria custa 79 euros. (link Renault)

O Mitsubishi i-Miev é comercializado no território português a 35.250 euros, IVA incluído (link Mitsubishi).

O Nissan Leaf custa 30.850 euros já com o incentivo de 5.000 euros. Este foi o primeiro veículo eléctrico de última geração a ser vendido a empresas portuguesas (e ao Governo), no final de 2010. A Nissan prevê entregar os primeiros Leaf a particulares ainda durante o primeiro trimestre de 2011, segundo o site da marca em Portugal.

Sem indicação clara por parte da marca, o preço do Citroën C-Zero é estimado em cerca de 36.000 euros, antes do desconto de 5.000 euros (site).

O Peugeot ION, cujas primeiras unidades já foram entregues em Portugal, é comercializado a 31.350 euros (site da marca).

O Mercedes Classe A E-CELL tem um preço indicado de 24.314 euros (link).

Comprar um veículo eléctrico em Portugal

Já é possível comprar um carro eléctrico em Portugal? Sim. Desde Dezembro de 2010, foram comercializadas várias dezenas de veículos eléctricos no nosso país, a maioria adquiridas por clientes empresariais. Os particulares também já podem reservar qualquer um dos sete modelos disponíveis no mercado luso e beneficiar de um benefício fiscal que pode chegar aos 6.500 euros.

A rede portuguesa de suporte aos veículos eléctricos também já está em marcha. Até ao Verão de 2011, o consórcio Mobi.e conta instalar 1.300 postos de abastecimento normal e 50 postos rápidos em todo o país.

Incentivos

O Governo português concede um benefício fiscal de 5.000 euros aos primeiros 5.000 novos proprietários de carros eléctricos. Caso o comprador entregue outro veículo para abate, o desconto pode subir até aos 6.500 euros. A medida, anunciada em 2010, mantém-se em 2011 apesar dos constrangimentos financeiros do país e está inscrita no Orçamento de Estado entretanto aprovado. Os veículos eléctricos estão ainda isentos do ISV (imposto sobre veículos) e do IUC (imposto único de circulação). Para as empresas, a compra de carros eléctricos é dedutível em sede de IRC (os híbridos não estão abrangidos pela medida). Informações e documentação legal disponível em Mobi.e

Postos de carregamento em Portugal

Nos próximos meses, e até ao Verão de 2011, está prevista a instalação de 1300 postos de carregamento normal e 50 rápidos de acesso público nas principais cidades portuguesas e nos percursos intermédios. Mitsubishi to launch eight new green cars by 2016

From the AFP: Japan's Mitsubishi Motors said Thursday that it will launch a new line-up of environmentally friendly cars by March 2016 and double operating profit in the next three years by focusing on emerging markets.

Mitsubishi will launch a total of eight electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, starting with a mini commercial vehicle, the MINICAB-MiEV, the company said as it unveiled a new mid-term business plan.

Japan's fourth-largest automaker launched the i-MiEV, the world's first commercially produced electric vehicle, in 2009 and the race to manufacture greener cars has heated up among rivals such as Nissan, Toyota and Ford.

The new models will also include Mitsubishi's first plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, to be rolled out in the fiscal year starting April 2012 as it looks to boost emerging market production to target growth.

It aims to double operating profit to 90 billion yen ($1.10 billion) in the year to March 2014 and triple net profit to 45 billion yen.

Mitsubishi hopes the new business strategy, which also includes cost cuts, will boost its earnings as it looks to expand its China business through a new joint venture with a local partner.

"There is huge domestic demand in China and people's living standards are rapidly improving. I believe there is no major doubt that China will continue to grow," company president Osamu Masuko told reporters.

The automaker said it would build a third factory in Thailand in fiscal 2011, making the nation the company's second-largest export hub after Japan, and produce a low-price, energy-efficient compact for the growing middle class.

Mitsubishi will also increase capacity in China and Brazil, and begin full-scale production of sport-utility vehicles in Russia.

Masuko said his company wants to maintain its production level in Japan but acknowledged it is "very difficult to keep the current export-oriented structure and expand output and capacity in Japan."

"We have to produce cars where consumers are and where there are less foreign exchange risks," he said.

For many Japanese automakers, the yen's surge against the dollar and the euro has eaten into profits and made exporting from Japan less profitable.

More companies are considering moving production abroad to stay competitive against rivals benefiting from weaker currencies in their home countries.

Mitsubishi's ratio of overseas production to total output is expected to rise to 54 percent in the fiscal year 2013 from 44 percent in fiscal 2010.

Global output is to soar to 1.58 million units from 1.1 million in the same period, the company said.

It targets sales of 2.5 trillion yen in fiscal 2013, up from 1.9 trillion yen expected for fiscal 2010 ending in March 2011.

Mitsubishi shares closed higher Thursday, up 1.69 percent at 120 yen, outperforming a 1.13 percent rise in the benchmark Nikkei index.

Mitsubishi iMIEV já pode ser alugado em Portugal

Do Mobi.e: O primeiro carro eléctrico da Mitsubishi já se encontra à disposição de todos aqueles que o queiram experimentar. Desde 1 de Janeiro já é possível alugar o i-MiEV nos stands Sixt rent a car, em Portugal.

Em comunicado, a empresa alemã de aluguer de automóveis garante disponibilizar "uma tarifa diária exclusiva para este lançamento de modo a satisfazer a curiosidade daqueles que gostam de conhecer novas formas de mobilidade, entrando assim no futuro".

A integração do i-MiEV no serviço de aluguer de veículos, faz parte da "estratégia que a Sixt tem delineada para 2011, que consiste na prestação de serviços e automóveis de qualidade superior não esquecendo a inovação".

Portugal foi o primeiro país europeu a receber o i-MiEV. Segundo a marca japonesa, Portugal «foi seleccionado como um dos mercados prioritários para o lançamento do i-MiEV, sendo o primeiro país na Europa a iniciar a sua comercialização, um ano depois de o veículo eléctrico da Mitsubishi ter sido lançado no Japão».

O veículo citadino de quatro lugares possui uma autonomia de 150 quilómetros, zero emissões de CO2 e baixo nível de ruído, e pode ser agora alugado num dos quatro stands da Sixt rent a car, nomeadamente nos aeroportos de Lisboa, Porto, Faro e Funchal.

Até Março, a Mitsubishi prevê produzir "11 mil unidades do i-MiEV e, a partir de 2012 a produção do i-MiEV será superior às 40 mil unidades por ano".

New Scientist: 2011 will be the year of the electric car

Tweet this post From the New Scientist: Gentlemen - and women - plug in your engines. This will be the year of the electric car. No, seriously. After seemingly endless testing, technical hiccups and plain reluctance on the part of manufacturers to move electric vehicles from the concept phase to the showroom, it's finally happening. A fleet of new cars powered by the plug instead of the pump will take to the road in 2011.

Leading the charge is the Chevy Volt. With a 16-kilowatt-hour battery and a 110-kilowatt (149-horsepower) electric motor, it can go 60 kilometres on a single charge, plenty for commuting and weekend grocery runs. Critics point out that a 1.4-litre gasoline engine kicks in when the battery runs down, making the Volt a mere hybrid rather than a fully fledged electric car. And with demand for the Volt forecast to far outstrip supply, some dealers in the US are reportedly slapping steep premiums on top of the already hefty $40,280 price tag.

Even if the Volt fizzles, the Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus Electric and Renault Fluence will all be widely available in the next 12 months. Then there's Mitsubishi's diminutive i-MiEV, powered by a 47-kilowatt electric motor and boasting a range of 160 kilometres. It has been on the road in Japan since 2009 and is expected to go on sale in both the UK and the US in the new year.

Two factors have combined to bring electric cars to the mass market at last: the arrival of high-capacity batteries and the near-collapse of the American auto industry, which forced US car makers into building small, efficient vehicles that can compete with foreign offerings.

The biggest remaining obstacle is cost. Electric vehicles offer the amenities of a compact car at the price of a luxury sedan. Tax breaks in some countries should help. But if the quiet whoosh of the electric motor is to replace the growl of the internal combustion engine, prices will have to plummet. Competition and yet more innovation in battery and drivetrain technology could allow that to happen.

Mitsubishi selects Costa Rica for iMIEV's American debut

This time's not California, but Central America's Costa Rica the first place in the continent that will get to see Mitsubishi's iMIEV rolling on its streets for the first time, in early 2011, local media reported.

The small country aims to be the first in the world to become carbon neutral by 2021 and is already hailed by the international community as one of the nations with the most ambitious green policies on the planet.

On the downside, few Costa Ricans will be able or even interested to buy the iMIEV, as it is expected to go on that market for the tag price of 61,500 dollars.

UK releases list of EVs eligible for grants

From the Green Car Congress: The first nine electric drive cars to become eligible for the Plug-in Car Grant of up to £5,000 (US$7,900, €5,896) in the UK are: Mitsubishi iMiEV; smart fortwo electric drive; Peugeot iON; Citroen CZero; Nissan Leaf; Tata Vista EV; Toyota Prius Plug-in; Vauxhall Ampera and Chevrolet Volt. More will follow next year.

The grant will be available to motorists across the UK from 1 January 2011, reducing the cost of eligible cars by a quarter, up to a maximum of £5,000.

The Government is also encouraging a new network of electric vehicle recharging points in streets, car parks and commercial retail and leisure facilities as driving electric cars becomes a part of everyday life for pioneering British drivers. The successful bidding consortia in this second phase are based in: the Midlands; Greater Manchester; East of England; Scotland and Northern Ireland.
